What’s it all about?

Why setting a social media marketing goal is crucial to success.

You know how everyone says you have to set a goal? You hear it constantly if you’re at all tuned in to classic marketing advice. But in my time working with small businesses, I’ve found most people don’t know how social media can serve them.

How do goals serve the greater good? It’s simple really. Setting a goal gives you a direction to aim for. Once you have your direction, you can set your messaging and strategy. Once you’ve got a solid goal, you’ve got something you can constantly refer back to when you feel like you’re off course. You can look back and ask - is this strategy still serving my goal?

So where to start? It’s important to know what kind of goals are available to those who want to employ social media in their strategy. You can look at social media marketing goals the same way you look at other marketing goals. How do they fit into your marketing funnel? Are you trying to grow brand awareness? Are you trying to convert followers either by getting them to sign up for your newsletter or having them purchase a product or service? Are you maybe trying to encourage your conversions to become loyal advocates? You could be trying for multiple of these goals but you need to prioritize one at a time.

For example, it’s completely reasonable to assume you’re trying to grow brand awareness and increase conversions. But you need to focus on one. Maybe your business isn’t quite ready for a flood of purchases so you’re trying to prime the market and increase awareness. This would be your main goal while soft selling your product or converting followers would be your secondary goal.

Maybe you have an event coming up and tickets aren’t on sale yet. That would make awareness your number one goal until your tickets are available. Then your goal would shift to conversions with awareness as a secondary goal. Lastly, during and after your event, you would switch to building loyalty for your next event.

These are small examples but they demonstrate how you can think about your goals, how often they can change and how you can have multiple goals at once.

Confusing? Let’s chat. We can work together and help make sense of it for your specific needs.

What exactly is content marketing?

Why content marketing? Let’s dig into what it is to understand why love it.

In short, it’s any video, picture and/or collection of words that serves to build your brand. Content marketing can be social media, newsletters, website copy and much more. You may not even realize that you’ve been content marketing when you posted on Instagram or Facebook or posted that blog post to your website.

The thing I find when talking to business owners is that they so often get stuck on what to post and end up posting nothing. Trust me, this is my story all too often as well. However, I absolutely love helping businesses strategize on what to post and how to post.

I love digging deep into what makes a business tick, which is often digging into what makes a business owner tick. Why do you have this business? What do you love about it? Why do you your business is needed? What excites you the most about it? All of these questions can be so hard to answer but unlock SO MUCH content for your marketing efforts.

Content Marketing vs Social Media management

In the dynamic world of digital marketing, navigating the realm of social media can be both exhilarating and daunting. With countless platforms, ever-changing algorithms, and the constant demand for engaging content, businesses and individuals often find themselves seeking guidance to maximize their online presence. Two common approaches to achieving social media success are Social Media Management and Content Coaching. While they share the goal of enhancing online visibility, they differ significantly in their focus, methods, and outcomes. Let's delve into the distinctions between these two invaluable strategies:

Social Media Management:

Social Media Management involves the day-to-day execution of a brand's social media strategy. It encompasses tasks such as content creation, scheduling posts, engaging with followers, monitoring analytics, and managing paid advertisements. A Social Media Manager is responsible for maintaining a consistent brand voice across various platforms and optimizing content to resonate with the target audience. They are adept at interpreting data to refine strategies and capitalize on trends, ensuring that the brand remains relevant and competitive in the digital landscape. Ultimately, Social Media Management aims to cultivate a vibrant online community, foster brand loyalty, and drive traffic and conversions.

Content Coaching:

Content Coaching, on the other hand, focuses on empowering individuals or teams to develop their content creation skills and strategies. A Content Coach provides personalized guidance, feedback, and resources to help business owners and/or managers unleash their creative potential and refine their content marketing efforts. This may involve brainstorming content ideas, honing writing skills, mastering visual storytelling techniques, or understanding the nuances of different social media platforms. Content Coaching goes beyond mere execution; it fosters a deeper understanding of audience preferences, content trends, and best practices, equipping clients with the knowledge and confidence to thrive independently in the digital sphere. I especially love working with businesses In Western North Carolina, Brevard and beyond.

Key Differences:

  1. Execution vs. Empowerment: Social Media Management revolves around executing predefined strategies, whereas Content Coaching empowers clients to become proficient content creators in their own right.

  2. Short-Term vs. Long-Term Focus: Social Media Management prioritizes immediate results and engagement, while Content Coaching emphasizes skill development and sustainable growth over time.

  3. External vs. Internal Resource: Social Media Management often involves outsourcing tasks to an external agency or specialist, whereas Content Coaching builds internal capabilities and expertise within the client's organization.

  4. Tactical vs. Strategic Approach: Social Media Management focuses on implementing tactics to achieve specific goals, while Content Coaching takes a strategic approach to content creation, fostering a deeper understanding of the underlying principles and objectives.

Finding the Right Fit:

Both Social Media Management and Content Coaching offer invaluable insights and support for navigating the complexities of digital marketing. The choice between the two ultimately depends on factors such as budget, resources, existing skill levels, and long-term objectives. For businesses seeking immediate results and hands-on support, Social Media Management may be the preferred option. Conversely, those looking to build sustainable content creation capabilities and unlock their creative potential may benefit more from the personalized guidance and empowerment offered by Content Coaching.

I think you could find success with either a SMM or a coach but I personally love the idea of working with SMBs who know have a drive to do their own digital marketing. I believe when you are your own voice, it’s the most powerful way to market.
